Most plots of land are just a bunch of weeds. It takes a lot of volunteers to come over and get rid of the weeds. But if the people are going to share the food when harvested, it’s a labor of practicality. For example, when you start a garden on a piece of land you first have to create rows where you’ll plant the produce in areas that are clear of weeds.

The new suggestions I found were diatomaceous earth [DE], Sluggo and Red Clover. DE is fossilized remains of one-celled algae. This white powder is rough and cuts the underbelly of the slugs. So, now the garden has a lovely snow effect.

At least we know that so far the bill has passed through the assembly with no votes against it. All were in favor of the A.B. 152. The next step is to get the bill approved and signed into a law. How it would work is to provide a 10 percent tax credit to farmers for the cost of fresh produce donated to food banks. Then the food banks would give the food free to Sacramento’s hungry population who could not otherwise afford the fruits and vegetables. Think of the alternative. Without the incentive, the food rots in the field anyway.

Worse yet, the tilled ground at the park turned to mud and then to hard clumps, not surprising since most of southern Illinois soil ahs a significant clay base.

Another way it is possible to resolve the compact soil problem is to add new organic soil purchased from your local nursery. The thing that many organic gardeners implement is add this organic soil into the regular soil. You need about three to six inches of natural and organic soil for the new mixture to work. When you do this for one or two years your soil will return to the living soil that it once was. Perseverance is essential to making your organic garden awaken.

Don’t become impatient. Organic Gardening takes time. It takes time to let your compost do its work so that your soil becomes rich and healthy. It also takes time for pest-control methods to work, such as building a beneficial insect population. Be patient. If you’re coming from a traditional background, you might be tempted to just dump synthetic fertilizer or toxic chemicals on your plants to get results quicker. But that will only set you back weeks if not months (or an entire growing season) if you wish to do things naturally again.

Keep your garden soil healthy. Soils contain natural minerals and vitamins. That is the reason why if your lawn has a fertile soil, then you can easily grow plants.

Growing onions can be done from seed, transplants or sets. When choosing seed to start your onions, you will have a larger choice of what you can plant, but can take five months for the seedlings to mature enough to be transplanted and they are more susceptible to disease.
